Pedro and Miguel: A One-In-A-Million Pair

In 1968, when Pedro and Miguel were born, their family had a double surprise - that they were twins and boys! Then, several hours later, they received word from the doctor that their twin boys had Down syndrome. Soon later, a nurse at the hospital told the family to "put them away and forget about them because all they would bring us was heartache." But Pedro and Miguel's family would never dream of doing such a thing to the sons that they had longed for and completed their family.

For the past three years, Tomas has served as the Director of ARC Broward IT Asset Recovery and is one of the most respected professionals in the industry. In 2015, Tomas became a Certified Hardware Asset Management Professional (CHAMP) after completing the certification course that focuses on hardware licenses and agreement negotiations, maintenance contact management, life-cycle management, inventory and redeployment of disposal assets. Arc Tech was fortunate to offer him a full-time position at our 25,000-square-foot warehouse. Nearly two years later, he continues to thrive and is appreciative of the opportunity.

Jonah, who completed his Occupational Experience Period (OEP) earlier this month, was accepted into ARC Broward Learning Institute’s Entry-Level Culinary Arts Certificate Program. If you are not familiar with our OEP, this is a 1- to 5-day trial period in which potential students are provided with the opportunity to “test out” the culinary arts program.

These dedicated and compassionate workers assist with a broad range of activities and they help ensure that individuals with IDD can be active participants in their communities. The job can be physically and emotionally draining. But the rewards while not necessarily monetary, are great--the ability to work directly with others who, in large measure because of you-- have a shot at a meaningful life.

The Importance of Running an ABA Classroom

When I was a young child, I wanted to be a teacher, but I also wanted to earn enough money to be “Middle to Upper Class.” So teaching was not my first career choice. Since my mother was a bookkeeper, I chose Accounting and Finance as my road to wealth. However; I was soon to discover that when you go against your true calling, you will be unhappy. Back to school I went for my degree in the field of Education, where I stayed for 16 years. I taught elementary, middle and high school students and found my passion was helping socially and physically disadvantaged high school students realize their dreams.

Robert Donato's Success Story

For 31 years, Robert Donato worked in one job for the same company. He then found himself unemployed. Living with a disability, Robert knew it would not be easy to find another job. That’s when he discovered ARC Broward’s Center for Financial Stability, which provides a main point of access to programs supporting the career aspirations of individuals with disabilities. In March of 2014, Robert enrolled in the Center for Financial Stability Material Handler Course, a 12-week program that prepares participants with a basic knowledge of electronics in a light industrial/warehouse setting.
