Program. ARC Broward has a contract with the State of Florida to provide
Employment Services (ES) and Supported Employment Services (SE).
ARC BROWARD uses current technology to assist
consumers in identifying their vocational strengths and weaknesses.
Work Place
Mentor is a comprehensive system for designing and conducting effective
community-based assessments and planning the employment of individuals with
special needs or limited work history. The assessment is structured as
collaboration between the consumer and staff. Practical employment plans
are created and monitored based on what has been learned about the consumer's
strengths, interests, and support needs.
Satisfaction surveys from consumers, family members
and referring counselors and Support Coordinators attest to the outstanding
personal touch of ARC Broward's Employment Services Department.
Supported Employment
enables people with disabilities
who have not been successfully employed to work and contribute to society.
Supported Employment focuses on a person's abilities and provides the supports
the individual needs to be successful on a long-term basis.
It allows people experiencing disabilities, their
families, businesses, and their communities to experience the successes of
people with disabilities. The partnership that Supported Employment has
established between individuals experiencing disabilities and their communities
is having a lasting impact on the way the public perceives people with
disabilities. Supported Employment affords the public the opportunity to
see the person for who they are rather than seeing the disability.
According to U.S. Census data from 2000, there
are 182,052 persons with a disability between ages of 21 and 64 living in
Broward County, Florida. Of that number, 65,175 are not employed! Many people
who have been disabled since birth have never had the opportunity to work
and many who acquired a disability later in life have become unemployed.
Supported Employment has become the answer for many, providing not only a
paycheck, but a sense of worth and value added to the community.
Employment
Services are designed primarily for
the person with a disability who has a work history but because of a disabling
condition is not able to continue the previous work and needs help in learning
what they can do and where they can fit into the local labor market. Consumers
work with an employment specialist who provides the support and job readiness
training necessary to reenter the job market. Areas of support include job
development, community mobility, job placement and limited job coaching.
Services are provided on varied days and times to accommodate work schedules
for individuals served.
